Markup
---

Markup is like HTML, only simpler, and you don't need to know HTML to use it. Please note that tags should be written as you see them here, and that both the opening (first) tag and the closing (second, with a / ) must be used. However, these demonstrations show spaces between the tags and the text between them so that you can see them more clearly. This will work, but it is not necessary. Finally, note that the color used for these tags (blue) has nothing to do with the tags themselves; it is merely to help you see them clearly -- you will type the tags in like any other text.

The following tags are available for your use in the forums:

About Nesting Your Markup Tags

Spoiler Tags

Please see this page for full details on our spoiler policies.
text
= Makes the text between the tags "invisible." You must highlight the text (drag your cursor over it while holding down the left mouse button) to view it. After the equal sign, you need to give some idea of what your spoiler is about, such as what episode it's for, if it's for future (unaired in the U.S.) episodes, etc. This is what people will see:

[Begin Spoiler for Spoiler description which you typed after the equal sign - Highlight to view]
Whatever you typed between the tags shows here.
[End Spoiler]

Acceptable variations:

[spoilers=Type your description here including episode title] text [/spoilers]
[sp=Type your description here including episode title] text [/sp]

---
text
= Makes the text between the tags "invisible." You must highlight the text to view it. If you choose to use this version of the spoiler tag, you must write a description above it stating what kind of spoilers are within (which episode is mentioned, etc.). This is what people will see:

[Begin Spoiler - Highlight to view]
Whatever you typed between the tags shows here.
[End Spoiler]

Acceptable variations:

[spoilers] text [/spoilers]
[sp] text [/sp]

Polls

[pollstart]
[polltitle=Poll Question]
[polloption=Option 1]
[polloption=Option 2]
[polloption=More Options]
[pollstop]
= Makes a poll, so that you can ask other forum members a question, and they can vote for their choice of answers.

For example:

[pollstart]
[polltitle=Which is your favorite character?]
[polloption=Buffy]
[polloption=Xander]
[polloption=Willow
[polloption=Other]
[pollstop]

Note that you can only put one poll in each post, and each poll can only have one question (as in the example above).

Please note that posts with polls in them CANNOT BE EDITED, so look closely at your poll code, preview your post carefully before you submit your post, and make sure you use any necessary spoiler tags. (You will be able to delete the post, change the subject, or change post options such as the Off Topic option. But you will not be able to edit the actual content of the post).

Creating Links

link = Makes the given url (such as http://www.buffyguide.com) into a link. For example, http://www.buffyguide.com would result in http://www.buffyguide.com. You can type the http:// if you wish, but it is not required.

text = Makes the text between the tags a link to the designated URL. For example, BuffyGuide.com would result in BuffyGuide.com. Again, you can type the http:// if you wish, but it is not required.

Icons

The icons exist to add a bit of color and personality to your posts; to further express your point or emotions. However, please do not use them in excess. In general, it's unnecessary (and annoying) to use more than about three in a row; definitely do not post a long string of icons. Use them, but don't abuse them.

About Nesting Your Markup Tags

Nesting describes the structural relationship between markup tags. When Tag A is nested inside Tag B, then Tag A should be opened and closed before Tag B is closed. Mixing up the tags can cause unpredictable results.

Basically, whichever tag is opened first should be closed last. Whichever tag is opened second should be closed second-to-last. And so on. For example, if you want to make something bold and italic, you should set it up like so:

 bold and italic

Or, if you want to make something bold and italic and partly red, you should set it up like so:

 bold and italic and [red]partly red[/red]

Now for something slightly more complicated. Let's say this is your goal: This text should be bold, this should be bold and purple, and this should be purple but not bold. You might be tempted to just do it like this:

This text should be bold, [purple]this should be bold and purple, and this should be purple but not bold.[/purple]

However, this would be incorrect and could cause problems. The bold and purple tags are overlapping — the first bold tag needs to be closed before the purple tag is opened. So, you should set it up like so:

This text should be bold, [purple]this should be bold and purple, and this should be purple but not bold.[/purple]

The markup system on these forums usually will not have a problem with small nesting errors, but it can sometimes cause problems. Usually, the problem will be seen when you edit your post — if the nesting of the markup is incorrect, then after you edit the post, the markup may not work any more, and you'll only see HTML code. If this happens, go back and examine your markup (including any markup in your signature!) and correct any nesting errors.
